Family photoshoot in Noto,
no boring poses.
Johanna and her husband came to Noto with their three children for a friend's wedding. Before the celebrations they wanted a family photoshoot in Noto: relaxed photos, nothing stiff. We met at 9 in the morning in the old town, while the streets were still quiet.

First, making everyone feel at ease
Almost every family freezes up a little in front of a camera, and that's normal. So I didn't start with photos. We walked and chatted, and I took a few shots here and there without asking anyone to stop and smile. After ten minutes nobody was thinking about the camera anymore. That's when the good photos start.
Photos as a game, not boring poses
Asking a six-year-old and a three-year-old to stand still and smile doesn't work for long: they get bored in a minute, and you can see it in the pictures. So for the girls the photos were a game, not a moment for boring poses. "Three, two, one, go!" and off they ran, racing each other across the square, then chasing me. Mum and dad watched from a few metres back with the baby.

The prize: gelato in front of Noto Cathedral
At the end there was a reward: gelato, at a little table right in front of the Cathedral. For the girls it was the best part of the morning. For me too: busy with their ice cream, they forgot about me completely, and I took some of the most natural photos of the whole session.

Coming to Noto with kids?
Book the morning. At 9 the old town is quiet, it isn't hot yet and the kids still have energy. Don't worry if they can't sit still: I won't ask them to. And keep a small reward for the end. In Noto, that part is easy.
